There are many extravagant claims that Coenzyme Q10 is a wonder supplement that can cure everything up to, and including, cancer – and stop the ageing process at the same time.
Whilst these claims are totally OTT, this supplement does show promise in the area of heart disease…
Reduce Satin Side Effects.
With roughly 7 million people in the UK taking prescribed statin drugs to reduce their LDL cholesterol levels, there are bound to be some people who suffer side effects.
Amazingly, though, one of these side effects – statin myopathy – is thought to affect 10% of those taking statins. One of the worst symptoms of this is muscle weakness and pain that can become so severe that patients are stopping taking their medication.
According to The American Journal of Cardiology, studies suggest that the production of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in the body is disrupted by statins & this is what leads to weak muscles and the associated pain.
As CoQ10 is essential for energy production in every cell, a deficiency may be the cause of the symptoms described by patients.
Further studies in America seem to show that supplementing with CoQ10 may decrease this muscle pain, offering an alternative to stopping treatment.
Reduce LDL Cholesterol Levels.
In German study published earlier in 2011, results showed that C0Q10 can reduce LDL cholesterol levels by up to 15%.
These findings suggest that CoQ10 supplements may prove to be an essential addition to a statin-based cholesterol reduction program.
Aids Recovery After Heart Failure.
But that’s not all! Following a number of clinical trials (that have shown that CoQ10 strengthens the heart in several areas), Danish cardiologists at Copenhagen University Hospital have started to use Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) as an important addition to standard heart medications.
Researchers have concluded that in 10 out of 13 studies into heart failure patients, most of the patients taking a CoQ10 supplements showed greater improvement.

So, whilst Coenzyme Q10 may not be a wonder supplement, if used in conjunction with your prescribed statins – which you should carry on taking – may aid the reduction in your cholesterol levels whilst alleviating the side effects of statins.
CoQ10 is available in store.
